About the Artist

Eugène Galien-Laloue was a prolific French painter best known for his charming and atmospheric depictions of Parisian street scenes during the Belle Époque. Working primarily in gouache and watercolor, he captured the bustling energy of boulevards, flower markets, horse-drawn carriages, and elegantly dressed pedestrians with remarkable detail and warmth.

His works often exude a nostalgic glow, documenting the transition of 19th-century Paris into a modern city. Galien-Laloue also painted under several pseudonyms — such as “J. Lievin” and “E. Galiany” — to accommodate the high demand for his art while navigating contracts with dealers.

Despite rarely seeking the spotlight, Galien-Laloue’s legacy endures through his evocative portrayals of everyday urban life. His paintings are treasured today for their romantic realism and historical value, offering timeless windows into the golden age of Paris.
