Item Description

About the Artist

Henri Matisse was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, known for his bold use of color, fluid draftsmanship, and pioneering role in modern art. Born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France, Matisse originally studied law before a bout of illness led him to discover painting — a turning point that changed his life forever.

Matisse rose to prominence as the leader of the Fauvist movement, a style defined by expressive, non-naturalistic color. His early works, such as Woman with a Hat (1905), shocked traditionalists and established him as a radical force in the Parisian art world. Over time, his style evolved toward greater simplicity and clarity, culminating in serene, decorative compositions like The Red Room (1908) and The Dance (1910).

In his later years, after surgery left him bedridden, Matisse invented a new art form: the cut-out, or “painting with scissors.” Works like Blue Nude II and The Snail exemplify this late style — bold, abstract, and full of life.

From oil painting to paper collage, from stained glass to book illustration, Matisse’s work always celebrated joy, color, and the beauty of form. He remains a towering figure in art history, a master of visual harmony whose influence endures across generations.
