Paul Cézanne was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose innovations reshaped the direction of modern art. Often called the “father of modern painting,” he sought to move beyond Impressionism’s fleeting light and capture the enduring structure of nature through form, color, and composition. His work bridged the gap between 19th-century naturalism and the radical abstraction of the 20th century.

Cézanne’s style is marked by layered brushstrokes, shifting perspectives, and a deep focus on geometric simplification. In his still lifes, such as The Basket of Apples (1895), he transformed ordinary objects into monumental studies of balance and structure. Though misunderstood in his time, Cézanne became a central influence for younger artists like Picasso and Matisse, who saw in his work the blueprint for Cubism and abstraction. His insistence on “treating nature by the cylinder, the sphere, the cone” was revolutionary, making him a bridge from Impressionism to modern art movements of the 20th century.

Today, Cézanne is recognized as one of the most influential figures in Western painting. His vision transformed how artists approached space, color, and structure, ensuring his legacy as a master who fundamentally redefined the possibilities of art.
