Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was a French painter and sculptor, renowned for his meticulously detailed style and vivid historical, mythological, and Orientalist scenes. A leading figure of Academic art in the 19th century, he trained under Paul Delaroche and rose to prominence at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he later became a highly influential teacher.

Gérôme’s paintings often depicted antiquity, biblical narratives, and exotic subjects, rendered with striking realism and theatrical composition. Works such as The Snake Charmer (c. 1879), Pollice verso (1872), and Pygmalion and Galatea (1890) showcase his fascination with historical spectacle and his ability to merge narrative drama with precise technique.

As an ardent defender of academic tradition, Gérôme opposed the rise of Impressionism, advocating for rigorous craftsmanship and classical themes. Beyond painting, he also created sculptures that echoed his pictorial mastery.

While once criticized as overly theatrical and conservative, Gérôme’s art has experienced renewed appreciation for its technical virtuosity, narrative power, and cultural insight. Today, he is recognized as one of the defining academic painters of 19th-century France.
