About the Artist

Frits Thaulow was a prominent Norwegian Impressionist painter celebrated for his poetic and atmospheric depictions of landscapes, especially flowing water, rural villages, and winter scenes. Born in Christiania (now Oslo), Thaulow initially studied marine painting in Copenhagen and later refined his style in Paris, where he was deeply influenced by French Impressionism and the work of artists like Monet and Sisley.

Unlike many of his Impressionist contemporaries who focused on light-filled gardens and urban life, Thaulow gravitated toward the quiet charm of nature and small-town life. He was especially gifted at capturing the textures and reflections of water—streams, rivers, canals—rendering them with stunning realism and emotional depth. His brushwork combined a keen observational eye with a soft, lyrical quality that resonated with viewers across Europe.

Thaulow spent much of his later life in France, painting in places like Dieppe and Quimperlé, where he found endless inspiration in the countryside. His works were widely exhibited and admired in both Scandinavia and France.

Today, Thaulow is remembered as one of Norway’s most beloved painters and a unique voice in the broader Impressionist movement, bridging Nordic naturalism with French sensibilities.
