About the Artist

Peter Birmann was a Swiss painter and draftsman renowned for his romantic landscapes and panoramic views of the Swiss Alps and the Rhine. Active during a period when travel and nature became central to European cultural imagination, Birmann helped shape the visual identity of Switzerland through art.

Born in Basel, he studied in Paris and Rome, where he was influenced by classical landscape traditions and the emerging ideals of the Romantic movement. Upon returning to Switzerland, he became a central figure in Basel’s art scene and began capturing his homeland’s mountainous terrain and river valleys with both geographic accuracy and poetic atmosphere.

One of Birmann’s most notable achievements was his series of scenic lithographs and panoramic works aimed at travelers and collectors — contributing to the rise of tourism in Switzerland. His artworks were frequently reproduced in books and travel albums, popularizing the sublime beauty of the Swiss landscape across Europe.

Peter Birmann’s legacy continued through his son, Samuel Birmann, who also became a respected landscape artist. Together, their work documents both the physical splendor of 19th-century Switzerland and the shifting European relationship with nature, exploration, and national identity.
