About the Artist
About the Artist
Franz Weisse was born in Leipzig, Germany, into a family of craftsmen, and he trained at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts before embarking on a career that bridged painting, illustration, and stained glasFranz Weisses design. Early in his career, he joined the Deutscher Werkbund, where he advocated for the integration of traditional craftsmanship with the modern machine age.
Weisse’s stained glass windows—commissioned for churches and public buildings across Germany—are notable for their jewel‑like color, stylized figuration, and harmonious compositions. His panels often depict allegorical or religious themes, marrying symbolism with clear narrative. Beyond glass, he taught design at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich, influencing a generation of decorative artists. Today, surviving examples of his work testify to his mastery of both material and light, marking him as a key figure in Germany’s early 20th‑century applied arts revival.
