Barend Cornelis Koekkoek was one of the foremost Dutch landscape painters of the 19th century, often referred to as the "Prince of Landscape Painting." A master of the Romantic style, Koekkoek is celebrated for his idyllic, meticulously rendered scenes of forests, rivers, and mountain vistas bathed in soft, atmospheric light.
Born into a family of artists in Middelburg, Netherlands, Koekkoek received formal training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. He traveled extensively through Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, drawing inspiration from nature and the Old Masters, particularly 17th-century Dutch landscape painters.

In 1841, he founded a drawing academy in Cleves (Germany), where he influenced a generation of artists and helped establish a school of Romantic landscape painting. His works blend poetic imagination with precise observation, evoking both the majesty and tranquility of the natural world.
