About the Artist
About the Artist
Paul Klee was a Swiss-born painter and teacher whose highly individual style bridged Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Known for his playful imagination, symbolic forms, and poetic use of color, Klee created works that often resembled dreams, musical compositions, or childlike drawings. He believed art should make the invisible visible, translating inner emotions and abstract ideas into visual language.
Klee taught at the Bauhaus (1921–1931), where his lectures on color theory and form became foundational for modern art education. His art explored rhythm, harmony, and abstraction, with recurring motifs such as arrows, suns, fish, and houses. Notable works include Twittering Machine (1922), which fuses whimsy with mechanical precision, and Senecio (1922), a stylized portrait that blends geometry with playfulness.
In the 1930s, the rise of the Nazis led to his dismissal from teaching in Germany, as his work was labeled “degenerate art.” He returned to Switzerland, where he continued painting despite declining health. Klee’s late works, infused with bold linework and luminous color, reveal both humor and depth.
Today, Paul Klee is celebrated as a pioneer of modern art, whose fusion of abstraction, symbolism, and lyricism continues to inspire artists worldwide.
