About the Artist

Frederick Carl Frieseke was an American Impressionist painter best known for his luminous depictions of women in sun-drenched gardens and domestic interiors. Born in Michigan and raised in Florida, Frieseke studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Académie Julian in Paris. He eventually settled in the artist colony of Giverny, France—home to Claude Monet—where he became one of the leading figures of American Impressionism abroad.

Frieseke's work is characterized by vibrant color, dappled light, and an elegant decorative quality. He frequently painted women reading, resting, or enjoying leisure in lush floral settings, capturing a sense of peaceful modern femininity. His palette was often light and pastel, and his brushwork delicate yet expressive, blending French Impressionist techniques with American sensibilities.

Unlike many European Impressionists, Frieseke favored clearly defined forms and composition, often incorporating patterns from textiles, wallpapers, and screens. These decorative elements aligned him with the “Decorative Impressionism” movement—a unique American variant of the style.

Though he spent most of his career in France, Frieseke remained active in American exhibitions and received numerous accolades, including a gold medal at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915. Today, his work is celebrated for its beauty, serenity, and masterful use of light.
