Item Description

About the Artist

Ferdinand Freiherr von Řezníček was an Austrian illustrator, caricaturist, and painter celebrated for his elegant, satirical depictions of society life at the turn of the 20th century. Known for his refined line work, sensual compositions, and keen social commentary, he became one of the most influential illustrators of the Viennese Belle Époque.

Born into an aristocratic family with military roots, Řezníček initially trained as an officer before pursuing art. He studied in Munich, where he joined the vibrant artistic circles that fueled Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) and Symbolism. His breakthrough came through his work with Simplicissimus, a German satirical magazine that pushed the boundaries of political and cultural critique.

Řezníček’s art often portrayed stylish women, flirtation, and social rituals with both wit and grace — blending eroticism and elegance in equal measure. His compositions captured the moods and mannerisms of the upper class while subtly revealing their vanities.

Though his life was cut short at just 41, his visual legacy helped shape early 20th-century magazine illustration and modern visual satire. Řezníček’s work remains admired today for its sophisticated humor, fluid style, and cultural insight.
