About the Artist

Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagnan-Bouveret was a French painter associated with Naturalism and Academic art. Born in Paris, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Alexandre Cabanel and became known for his ability to combine photographic realism with emotional depth.

Dagnan-Bouveret earned acclaim for his genre scenes, portraits, and religious subjects, which often carried a quiet intensity and deep spirituality. His works, such as The Pardon in Brittany (1886), reveal his sensitivity to light, detail, and atmosphere, reflecting the influence of photography on his painting technique.

Throughout his career, he won numerous awards at the Paris Salon, eventually becoming a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Dagnan-Bouveret’s paintings stand out for their technical mastery, sincerity, and serene beauty, making him one of the leading French academic painters of the late 19th century.
