Frances Hodgkins was a trailblazing modernist painter from New Zealand whose vibrant, expressive style made her one of the most celebrated expatriate artists of her time. Though born far from the traditional centers of European art, she became a respected figure within the British avant-garde and helped redefine the boundaries of still life and landscape painting.

Hodgkins began her career as a watercolorist in Dunedin, New Zealand, before moving to Europe in the early 20th century. She studied and exhibited in Paris and London, immersing herself in the bold experimentation of Modernism. Influenced by Post-Impressionism and Fauvism, she developed a distinctive style that emphasized rich color, rhythmic composition, and a deeply personal sense of form.
