Wassily Kandinsky was a visionary pioneer of abstract art and one of the most influential painters and theorists of the 20th century. Born in Moscow and trained in both law and art, Kandinsky left behind a conventional career to pursue painting with a spiritual intensity that would change modern art forever.
He believed that color and form could evoke emotions without representing the physical world, much like music. This conviction led him to break free from traditional realism and eventually create some of the world’s first purely abstract paintings. His works, often described as visual symphonies, used bold shapes, lyrical lines, and vibrant hues to express what he called “inner necessity.”
Kandinsky co-founded Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a movement that emphasized emotional resonance over literal meaning. He later taught at the Bauhaus, where he further developed his theory of abstract composition and mentored a generation of modernists.
To this day, Kandinsky’s work represents a radical rethinking of what painting could be — not just a window to the world, but a direct conduit to the soul.
