Granville Redmond was an American landscape painter and deaf artist celebrated for his luminous California scenery. Born in Philadelphia, he lost his hearing to scarlet fever in early childhood and later studied at the California School for the Deaf and the University of California, Berkeley.
Awarded a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he trained under Thomas Eakins before returning to the West Coast. Redmond’s canvases—depicting poppy fields, coastal bluffs, and desert vistas—are characterized by vibrant light effects and expressive, yet controlled, brushwork.
A close friend of silent-film actor Charlie Chaplin, Redmond also taught art at the deaf school and exhibited widely in California. His work remains a testament to the intersection of American Impressionism and the early 20th-century Californian landscape tradition.
