Born Domenico Zampieri in Bologna, Domenichino apprenticed under the Carracci before relocating to Rome around 1602. His early commissions in San Sisto and Sant’Andrea della Valle established his reputation for balanced compositions and delicate figuration. Unlike his mentor Carracci’s dynamic style, Domenichino favored serene narrative clarity, exemplified in works like The Martyrdom of Saint Agnes.
In 1616, he moved to Naples at the invitation of Cardinal Filomarino, where he created frescoes for the chapel of San Gennaro and further altarpieces. His Neapolitan period introduced more dramatic lighting but retained his hallmark grace. Returning to Rome in 1631, Domenichino completed the fresco cycle in the Palazzo Albertoni, one of his most personal projects. His premature death from fever in 1641 cut short a career that bridged Bolognese classicism and Roman Baroque, influencing artists such as Nicolas Poussin and Andrea Sacchi.
