Sir Anthony van Dyck was born in Antwerp and apprenticed with Peter Paul Rubens before establishing himself as Europe’s premier portraitist. His early works display Rubens’s exuberant Baroque style, but Van Dyck soon developed a refined elegance, noted for elongated figures, cool palettes, and aristocratic poise.
Called to England in 1632 by King Charles I, Van Dyck became Principal Painter at the court and produced iconic portraits of the monarch, queen, and nobility—imbuing them with dignified understatement. His influence reshaped British portraiture for centuries, as seen in the works of Gainsborough and Reynolds.
Van Dyck also painted religious and mythological subjects, but it is his group compositions and depictions of horsemen—with sweeping brushwork and psychological acuity—that cemented his reputation. His premature death in London at 41 cut short a glittering career, yet his stylistic legacy remains pervasive.
