Alexandre-Évariste Fragonard was born in Grasse as the only son of Jean-Honoré Fragonard and followed his father’s footsteps into painting. Trained under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin at the École des Beaux-Arts, he adapted Rococo elegance to Neoclassical themes.
His works include monumental history paintings—such as The Separation of Héloïse and Abelard—and decorative cycles for public buildings like the Palais du Luxembourg. Fragonard’s polished technique combines mythological drama with Romantic sentiment.
Despite working in his father’s shadow, he achieved recognition as a portraitist of Napoleonic dignitaries and later as a professor at the École. His career bridged the fading Rococo and ascendant Romantic classicism in post-Revolutionary France.
