Adrien Dauzats was born in Bordeaux and initially worked as a theater set designer before traveling extensively in the Middle East with travelers and diplomats. His sketches and watercolors from Egypt, Syria, and the Arabian Peninsula were published as lithographic portfolios, bringing Orientalist imagery to European audiences.
A member of the Commission des Sciences et des Arts accompanying the Morea expedition to Greece, Dauzats documented archaeological sites, coastal vistas, and local customs with documentary precision and Romantic flair. His Orientalist paintings—lush in color and detail—catered to a European fascination with “exotic” cultures.
Dauzats later taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and curated collections for museums. His dual legacy as traveler-artist and educator contributed significantly to 19th‑century French landscape and Orientalist painting.
