Joos van Cleve was a Netherlandish painter whose dynasty-like workshop in Antwerp produced portraits, devotional images, and mythological scenes. Possibly trained in Cleves, he later established himself among the leading artists of the Low Countries.
Van Cleve’s portraits—characterized by delicate modeling, precise detail, and elegant attire—captured the wealth and status of the Burgundian nobility. His religious works, such as Madonna and Child, combine Northern realism with Italian influences, reflecting the cross-cultural currents of the Renaissance.
He trained many pupils and stamped his workshop’s output with a consistent quality. Despite limited documentation, van Cleve’s varied oeuvre influenced both portraiture and devotional art in 16th-century Europe.
