Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse was a French historical and portrait painter trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jacques-Louis David. Born in Paris, he won the Prix de Rome and studied in Italy, where he absorbed Renaissance and Baroque influences.
Mauzaisse specialized in grand historical canvases—depicting Napoleonic victories and royal ceremonies—as well as refined portraits of high society. His work combines academic precision with vivid storytelling, reflecting the shifting political landscapes of post-Revolutionary France.
Appointed a professor at the École, Mauzaisse influenced a generation of French painters. Though overshadowed by more radical contemporaries, his disciplined technique and compositional clarity remain exemplary of early 19th-century classicism.
